Oral Presentation Assignment:
Incorporate any of the various topics in this unit (Syncretism, Music and
Politics, Music and Religion, Continuity and Change, Nationalism, Negotiating
Tradition, Music and Identity) to critique an approved article or book chapter
on African Performing Arts. This will form the basis of your oral presentation.
There must be an even distribution of work between the students.
Presentation will be 10 minutes in duration followed by five minutes of
discussion. Essays should be modelled after the many journal articles read
this semester where you become the researcher. Choose a particular
historical event, prominent musician, performance style or cultural genre in
any of the African countries. Read and research current journal articles
and/or books on the topic and apply critical thinking in your essay by
evaluating the resources, comparing data, and synthesizing the perspectives
of the various authors.
Approach your chosen topic in this essay as an historian, biographer,
musicologist or an ethnomusicologist. For example, if you examine
biographies on a popular music artist as your principal research topic, in
addition to this as the main discussion of the essay, briefly present the history
of the genre, address his/her approach to improvisation, and some of the
messages in the music. Throughout the semester, our readings from various
journals and books will reveal approaches to Malaysian and Indonesian music
studies. Give particular consideration to sociological issues, economic,
ethnic, religious, and gender issues as well as theoretical and analytic
concepts as they apply to your topic.
Guidelines for essay writing:
In essays, it is not sufficient to simply regurgitate the information found in
readings. You need to assess, compare and synthesize the data critically and
objectively so that you collect and draw your own conclusions about the topic.
In particular, you should highlight any differences in perspective, opinion or
interpretation revealed in your readings to demonstrate a broad
understanding. For example, an entire essay about how wonderful thumb
piano music is will not suffice. Be objective and also consider opposing views
on the music, the instrument, the socio-political context of the music and so
on.
If you have found the perspective of one author particularly useful in
understanding your topic, you should indicate this and be able to back it up
with reasons. In essay topics that require comparison you should strive to
systematically discuss and compare various angles and viewpoints. For this
essay of 1000 words, you should have around 4-8 journal articles or books
listed as resources for your research. JSTOR is an excellent search engine
Remember that one good article on your subject will have its own bibliography
which will lead you to other books and articles related to your topic.
