1) THE GREEN SOURCE
The forest is not only the source of life, but also source of imagination and myths.
I will introduce the work of the German/American surrealist painter and sculptor Max Ernst (1891–1976), whose images of forests in painting and frottage were deeply inspired through the so called “petrified forests” – ancient trees that had turned into stone – in Sedona/Arizona, where he lived after escaping from the German Nazi-Regime from 1941. Also the works of the Danish painter and sculptor Per Kirkeby (1938-2018), a trained geologist before turning to the arts, reflect the manifold aspects of the forest.

In the practice the students will first go into their own personal memories/encounters with a forest through a writing practice and then produce imaginary scenery of forests, using drawing, painting and the technique of frottage.

2) PLANTING SEEDS
We find complex depictions of agriculture already around 1500 B.C. in Egyptian wall paintings. After introducing the works of Vincent van Gogh, his drawings and paintings of farming, planting, spreading seeds, I will introduce Japanese images of the seasonal works of rice-growing, followed by a contemporary installation work of the Russian artist Ilya Kabakov (1933 - ), a permanent installation in the rice-fields of the Niigata-prefecture from the year 2000 and other works of Kabakov, related to agriculture.

In the practice the students will explore the rhythms of seasons and farming by drawing and painting.

3) DREAMING OF NATURE / COMMUNICATING WITH NATURE
Forests are artificially recreated in parks, as in the French and English models. The longing to be close to Nature is also reflected in the paintings of the German expressionists, “Die Brücke”. I will introduce the works of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880-1938) and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff (1884-1976). From the images of the dream of being with Nature I will move to the outdoor sculpture work of the Spanish artist Eduardo Chillida (1924-2002), which can be seen as sensitive communicators of the powers of Nature.

In the practice the students will build a three-dimensional model with random materials – “Being with Nature - the Room of Dreams and Communication”

4) DESTRUCTION – RECONSTRUCTION
The ways, how the exploitation and loss of Nature and new future visions are reflected in 20th/21st century art, will be the topic of the last lecture. Beginning with the installation “7000 Oaks” at the documenta 7 in 1982 of the German artist Joseph Beuys (1921-1986), I will introduce other related works of the British artist Tony Cragg (1949-), the Scandinavian artist Olafur Eliasson (1967 -) and the Chinese artist Song Dong (1966-).
It will become clear, that the highly urgent questions of Human Life and our attitude towards Nature – the present situation as well as positive visions for the future, are transmitted through artistic expressions in the most powerful ways.

In the practice, by using photographs of Taiwanese landscapes, by the means of drawing, painting and collage, the students will produce imaginary outdoor-installations, expressing their individual concern about Nature.

During the last third of all teaching sessions the students will rehearse for a performance. At the end of the Intensive-Workshop the students will do a dance-theater-performance, reflecting the topic of the Workshop.
